Evangelion
Units
Evangelion Units actually are not robots. They are
mostly organic, and seems to share a lot in common with the Angels. Evangelions
lack "souls" which are supplied by pilots who are inserted into the unit
by an Entry Plug. These entry plugs are filled with LCL which help the
pilots to synchronize with the units. LCL (Link Connect Liquid) is a liquid
rich with oxygen that replaces normal air and directly enters the lungs
and protects the pilot by absorbing the shock generated during battle with
the Angels. It is close to the amniotic fluid produced by pregnant mothers
to support unborn babies in the womb. It has also the smell of blood. When
synchronized, the pilot and Eva unit becomes, in essence, one being; this
means whatever happens to Eva is felt by the pilot and whatever the pilot
thinks or does, the same thing is done by the Eva unit. While this is an
advantage since it greatly simplifies piloting, it causes certain problems,
since all the pain Eva unit experiances is directly transferred over to
the Pilot as well. They are developed by NERV to fight against the attacking
Angels. These humanoids are protected with their armor and need external
power sources, which explains why cables are always stuck on their backs.
This cables are called Umbilical Cables. The name came from the word "umbilical
cord" of the womb that allows a pregnant mother to fed her unborn child.
If the cables are cut, they still have internal power that will provide
alternative power for 5 minutes, then the Evas are powerless. Like the
Angels, Evas can also generate Absolute Terror Field, AT field for short,
for some kinda protection force field. In psychology, AT field means the
imaginary wall that patients with high egos and autism produce. These beasts
are controlled by 14 years pilots. It's a mystery that every Eva must be
piloted by a 14 years old child without a mother. That's why Rei, Shinji
and Asuka were chosen to pilot the Evas. The word Eva is a short for Evangelion.
It's also a German word for the word "Eve", a religious word derived from
the Old Testament of the Christian Bible. According to the Bible, Eve was
the wife of Adam, the first man to be created by God in his likeness. She
tempted Adam into eating the forbidden fruit in the Garden of Eden, and
was exiled forever as punishment for disobeying God.
